There’s been so many over the years that it is hard to remember all of them. To me, that’s a good thing though. There’s been a some mess on here, but I think the good far outweighs the bad. We may not all agree on every single thing, but everybody is respecful for the most part.

That is what Oppo is all about. It’s about sharing the good and the bad. It’s asking for advice and help. It’s getting to know one another. It’s understanding that we are all part of something grand, even if we are a tiny speck in the internet universe.

What makes this forum great? Easy. The people here are what make it great.

There are a couple, for me.

1. The day NSFW was finally banned. After months and months of Oppo’s (few) female members saying “enough with the sexism,” the mods finally agreed to ban it.

They may have said that the reason was to keep Oppo accessible (SFW) no matter where you were, but I know that for some mods, the reason really was to take a stand against sexism here on Oppo, which is 98 percent male.

2. The day the Supreme Court ruled on marriage equality and one of the mods changed the banner to the Pride flag.

That, in itself, isn’t remarkable because the Oppo banner gets changed all the time. What WAS remarkable and awesome, and just fucking kick ass was how, once several posts popped up accusing the mods of being unnecessarily political, or how changing the banner to the Pride flag was stupid, or how people didn’t need/want to see that..... How once that happened, so many of the mods (and Opponauts, too) came forward to take a stand for equality. It was awesome to see so many people say, “Hey. This is a big deal. We welcome everyone here and we are happy to celebrate a change that either affects us directly or affects people we care about.”

2a. Speaking of changing the Oppo banner: I love how the Oppo banner gets changed all the time. It’s always creative and well done. I think that’s one of the best little “inside” aspects of this place.

3. The post by Oran J. Sands (hope I got his name right) about setting a world record for driving around a roundabout. I don’t think many people were aware of Sands on Oppo before that post (I know I wasn’t), but his post was completely delightful, humorous, entertaining and perfect Oppo. It was just such a cool story and Mr. Sands seems like a really cool gentleman. His story had me smiling all day.

4. Sebring convertible. Spats or differences of opinion happen here sometimes. With thousands of approved authors and hundreds of members who participate daily, that’s no surprise. But it’s awesome (I know I use that word a lot) how we are able to laugh at ourselves. Inevitably, when it looks like a discussion is going to get super srs , then someone will post a comment about Sebring Convertibles and next thing you know, there’s five posts about them. It reminds people to step back and laugh. That’s a great thing.

5. Then there’s all the other little Oppo quirks, like Miata being the answer, or “save the manuels” or the Blackbird post always resurfacing in the popular posts sidebar.

There are plenty more, I'm sure. These are just the ones I can think of off hand that are the most recent. :)

I don’t have a specific moment, but I think the open acceptance every single day is Oppo’s trump card. This place is more accepting than anywhere else on the Internet I swear. The exact opposite of Youtube. Almost every comment, regardless of batshit opinion, is treated with respect.

284 global uniques per month! Hahaha... It’s pretty easy for us to keep up with, but I think it’s still known about by only a small percentage of OPPO. If you don’t mind reminding the Jalop staff about it, it’s a good resource for them to find shareable OPPO posts for “the front page”, as it was once known.
